Scope of Position:
Based on the needs of the Customer, an Engineer designs cost effective formwork, shoring and scaffolding solutions, and prepares drawings (including material take-offs) for standard and custom designs. The Engineer is expected to attend meetings, develop direct relationships with customers, and communicate directly with them on technical issues. They exhibit knowledge and design skills associated with an experienced design professional. As an engineer, the Engineer is expected to take responsibility for their design work and to authenticate their own work; as experience dictates, they can also supervise the work done by others and authenticate their work as well.
What you'll do on a typical day:
- Develop formwork, shoring and scaffolding solutions for various kinds of construction projects.
- Create general arrangement, assembly, and steel fabrication drawings in 3D and 2D.
- Interact with PERI’s Technical Sales Consultants to provide the most cost-effective design solutions.
- Directly interface with customers to understand customer’s needs.
- Ensure the designs meet national and local standards (e.g., CSA, OHSA, and National and Provincial Building Codes).
- Perform and document design calculations, including the use of in-house and external structural analysis software, to ensure safe and economical designs.
- Exhibit the knowledge and design skills associated with an experienced design professional.
- Provide concepts and design direction to Engineering Interns, Draftspeople and Designers.
- Review and approve designs of more junior team members and arrange for drawings to be authenticated.
- Authenticate own work as per the standard of provincial professional engineering associations.
- Create material lists and check material lists done by others.
- Create and maintain engineering-related documents.
- Adhere to drafting and engineering procedures as set out in the Quality Management system and Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP).
- Mentor, assist and instruct Engineering Interns, Draftspeople and more junior Designers.
- Mentor, and participate in the supervision of the professional development of, Engineers In Training.
- Visit job sites and provide technical support when required.
- Other related duties as assigned.
What you'll need to be successful:
- A degree in Civil Engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.).
- 4-5 plus years of experience in structural engineering and construction.
- Basic AutoCAD skills, are an asset.
- 2 plus years of experience using structural analysis software.
- Formwork design experience: scaffolding design experience is an asset.
- Good understanding of structural and architectural drawings, as well as construction sequencing.
- Understanding of Canadian and Provincial Building Standards and Codes; basic understanding of European standards, relevant to formwork and/or scaffolding, is an asset.
- High attention to detail, organizational skills, drive, and ability to prioritize their tasks.
- Very effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work with Revit is an asset.
- Has direct contact with customers to deal with technical questions and for clarification.
- Decides on design details to be used in their designs and the designs of Drafts people and Designers. Decides on drawing layouts.
- Applies design changes, within PERI design guidelines, based on customers’ requests.
- Limited authority for approval of design work (drawings, material lists and design notes) of others, for specific systems.
- Makes decisions on design substitutions in the event of material shortages.
- Determines required amount of time for their own task scheduling for the majority of their work, relying on the Lead Designer/Engineer or Engineering Manager for more complicated scopes.
- Can delegate to and oversee some work of more junior team members, when assigned that task by the supervising team member.
- Ultimate design responsibility for own work and, as experience dictates, for the work of others, signified by stamping of designs.
- Training and mentoring of local and/or national team members / new hires.
