Scope of position:

Based on the needs of the Customer, a Senior Designer designs cost effective formwork, shoring and scaffolding solutions, and prepares drawings (including material take-offs) for standard designs and advanced custom designs. The Senior Designer is expected to attend meetings, develop direct relationships with customers, and communicate directly with them on technical issues. They are also expected to schedule, train, direct the design efforts, check, and approve the work of junior team members. A Senior Designer is expected to take responsibility for their design work and that of others who they supervise on a project-by-project basis. 

What you'll do on a typical day:

  • Develop formwork, shoring and scaffolding solutions for various kinds of building and infrastructure construction projects utilizing PERI’s more advanced systems when required. 
  • Create, or direct the creation of, general arrangement, assembly, and steel fabrication drawings in 3D and 2D. 
  • Preparation of sophisticated offer presentations for PERI customers. 
  • Interact with PERI’s Technical Sales Consultants to provide the most cost-effective design solutions.  
  • Directly interface with customers to understand customer’s needs. 
  • Work closely with design professionals (e.g., internal & external stamping engineers) to ensure the designs meet national and local standards (e.g., CSA, OHSA, and National and Provincial Building Codes). 
  • Perform and document design calculations, including the use of in-house and external structural analysis software, to ensure safe and economical designs. 
  • Exhibit the knowledge and design skills associated with an experienced design professional. 
  • Provide concepts and design direction to Engineering Interns, Draftspeople and Designers. 
  • May be involved in reviewing and approving drawings and calculations of more junior team members, and arranging for drawings to be authenticated. 
  • Create, or direct the creation of, material lists. 
  • Check, or delegate responsibility for the checking of, material lists done by others. 
  • Create and maintain engineering-related documents. 
  • May have or share responsibility for setting the department work schedule and assigning work to meet the needs of PERI’s customers. 
  • Adhere to drafting and engineering procedures as set out in the Quality Management system and Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP). 
  • Mentor, assist and instruct Engineering Interns, Draftspeople and more junior Designers.  
  • Visit job sites and provide technical support on a regular basis. 
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

What you'll need to be successful:

  • A degree in Civil Engineering, a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, or relative industry experience / education. 
  • 5 plus years of experience in structural engineering and construction. 
  • 3 plus years of experience using AutoCAD. 
  • 4 plus years of experience using structural analysis software. 
  • Formwork design experience: scaffolding design experience is an asset. 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills. 
  • Excellent understanding of structural and architectural drawings, as well as construction sequencing. 
  • Good understanding of Canadian and Provincial Building Standards and Codes; understanding of European standards relevant to formwork and/or scaffolding. 
  • Advanced PERI product knowledge. 
  • Bilingual (English and French), is an asset.  
  • Vehicle and valid driver’s license required. 
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, drive, and ability to prioritize their tasks and the work of others 
  • High sense of urgency 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal  
  • The ability to interact with customers at a high level, to provide input on solutions to design challenges 
  • Skilled at mentoring and training team members 
  • Excellent ability to learn quickly and to work well independently in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to work in a team environment 
  • Very strong problem-solving and decision-making skills 
  • Skilled with the Microsoft Office suite of programs 
  • Advanced ability to work with AutoCAD 2D and 3D 
  • Ability to work with Revit is an asset 
  • Skilled at mentoring and training team members
