Yard Manager

Scope of Position:
The Yard Manager is accountable for all operational functions at their assigned site. This role provides direct leadership to operational leaders, driving efficiency, productivity, and continuous improvement. Reporting to senior leadership, the Yard Manager plays a critical role in identifying operational challenges and delivering effective solutions. This individual champions and enforces all Health & Safety standards, fostering a safe and compliant work environment. The ideal candidate is a steady and proactive leader who can coordinate multiple priorities, make informed decisions quickly, and ensure seamless operations without disruption.
What you'll do on a typical day:
Team Leadership & Development:
- Cultivate and empower a dedicated team of yard employees to deliver exceptional customer service and uphold a standard of excellence.
- Recruit, develop, and manage employees to maintain high performance and customer service standards.
- Conducts initial interviews, makes hiring recommendations for approved positions, and provides input regarding employment terminations.
- Prioritize, delegate, and monitor work assignments for team members.
Yard Operations Management:
- Manage all sections of the yard, including shipping, receiving, and quality.
- Establish, track, and manage key performance indicators (KPIs) to achieve operational goals.
- Monitor and improve operating ratios to exceed established performance expectations.
- Maximize inventory accuracy through effective tracking and verification processes.
- Maintain quality assurance standards for materials and operational processes.
- Review, optimize, and improve operational workflows and procedures.
- Optimize labour, equipment, and material resource utilization.
- Optimize yard space, storage layouts, and overall yard efficiency.
- Manage a fleet of forklifts and ensure proper utilization.
Facilities Management:
- Directly oversee facilities operations, including maintenance and repair of office, warehouse, and yard.
- Obtain quotes and tenders from vendors and suppliers; verify completed work by contractors and vendors.
- Develop and implement cost-reduction initiatives related to facilities and operations.
Health, Safety & Compliance:
- Maintain the highest standards of workplace Health & Safety, including:
- Ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and company policies/procedures.
- Identifying hazards and implementing appropriate control measures.
- Ensuring employees are trained on all applicable equipment.
- Conducting regular safety talks, toolbox meetings, and training sessions.
- Performing regular workplace inspections and follow-up actions.
- Investigating incidents, accidents, and near misses.
- Participate in workers’ compensation claims management and the return-to-work program.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Provide frequent updates on work progress, performance, and operational challenges.
- Maintain effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional departments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll need to be successful:
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a warehouse, distribution centre or rental yard environment.
- Proven experience in overseeing the day-to-day operations of facilities management practices.
- Demonstrated experience in organizing, tracking and maintaining inventory and inventory records.
- Working knowledge of applicable provincial Health & Safety requirements and an ability to apply these practices.
- Experience in an outdoor yard environment preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong organization, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Self-motivated with thew ability to work autonomously.
- The ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Frequently required to make operational decisions to support daily yard performance.
- Oversee and manage overtime requests, ensuring compliance with policies.
- Oversee and manage employee PTO to maintain service levels and operational coverage.
- Prioritize, delegate, and monitor work assignments for team members.
